Here's a review from last months gig by Laura Brett. Just to let you know what you're in for.

Singer Songwriter Showcase, Bodega

Friday night at Bodega played host to a new Singer Songwriter Showcase, featuring some of Wellington's finer up and coming acoustic artists. With comfy armchairs, low lit lamps and an open fireplace the intimate setting of the downstairs Burgundy Room seemed the perfect home for a chilled out evening of wine and song. So, with our five dollars paid on the door and drinks collected from the bar, we sat down ready to experience some new talent, and we weren't disappointed.

Opening the night was local artist Louis Baker. A student at the NZ School of Music his jazz roots shone through with a captivating, soulful set that eased everyone into the night. Next up was Nick Fraser, an impressively skilled guitarist with vocals reminiscent of The Shins' James Mercer. As he played, heads nodded and toes tapped in agreeance that we were indeed in the presence of some mighty talented young folks.

As the room filled and seats were taken cross-legged on the floor, local character Sven Adam took to the stage to treat us to an entertaining mix of songs and story-telling chat. Looking like a young Tom Waits and sounding like a bluesier Jeff Buckley, Sven is a natural talent, the song Ain't No Place Like Home being a particular highlight. The only female on the bill (and organiser of the showcase) was travelling songbird Mara Simpson. Recently arrived on New Zealand's shores, the little lady with the big voice gave an accomplished performance, channeling the sweet, clear sound of Beth Orton and the folksy stylings of Joni Mitchell. Accompanied throughout by The Volunteers' ever-charismatic drummer Malky Taylor, they finished their set by inviting Sven Adam back to the stage for one final knees up, which had the audience swinging and cheering for more.

Rounding off the evening were Dan Green and Ed Cotrell. Encapsulating the eclectic mood of the show Dan delivered a sterling set of rolling country and slide guitar, his powerful vocals envoking the growling spirit of Eddie Vedder. Finally Ed Cotrell played us out with a mellow blend of covers and originals, sending us into the night humming Damien Rice and marvelling at the array of young talent on offer. Ascendeding the stairs to the buzzing feedback of The Checks warming up the main stage it appeared the night wasn't over yet, but I couldn't think of a better way to spend a relaxed Friday evening than in the company of these fine young musicians.
