Okkervil River
Kicks off: May 13 '09 @ 21:00
Tuesday 12th May at the Kings Arms , Auckland
Wednesday 13th May at Bodega, Wellington
The last time Okkervil River played in New Zealand, local reviewer
Brannivan Gnanilingham had this to say about band and lead singer,
Will Sheff :
Sheff clutched that microphone like it was a life-jacket, singing as
if someone had a gun to his head, His voice was even more impressive
live, powerful, resonant, and given the power of an immense live band
behind him, it was quite something…Okkervil River's was one of the
best live performances I think I may have ever seen. I emphasise the
word "ever".
Okkervil River take their name from a river in Russia mentioned in a
short story by the Russian writer Tatiana Tolstoya. Their latest
album, The Stand Ins, extends the themes – fame. celebrity and the
faith that we all have in music - of their breakthrough album The
Stage Names.
Pitchfork says : 'Touring almost constantly, Okkervil, River have
transformed into an urgent rock band that imbues Sheff's songs with as
much energy and personality as he does… He's become one of the best
lyric-writers going in indie rock. '
